My wife and i live in Enfield and are considering moving to PB and would appreciate some advice on the area and quality of life. My wife is a dentist and worked in PB in the past. While she did not get to know the area in depth she felt it appeared to be a nice area- green & pleasant.

We would especially welcome any insight in whether there are some areas that are better than others- e.g. for quality of houses, being clean, low crime, environment, etc. And which part of PB is the nicest?

Thank you.

The Potters Bar Times (27/1/10) seemed to be a bit lacking in information in its report. I went to a Herts Highways meeting on 26th Jan. I think the following is an accurate record of the details they gave:
The work will be done in 3 phases from The Mountway to the Admiral Byng roundabout. It is to dig out 8 inches of surface, then refill. During half term week, the section of road being resurfaced will be closed between 9am and 5pm. The following week, it will be 9.30 to 4.30pm. The Admiral Byng roundabout will be closed for 1 or 2 working days - which will close Manor Road, and the service road behind the shops for the 9/9.30am to 4.30/5.00pm period. I assume the phasing is such that those that live in roads from The Avenue to Mountway, will maintain a vehicle route to and from their home. Some drainage work is also being done at Admiral Byng. Its costing £200,000.

Hello I wonder if any of your forum users can help me? I'm doing some research into the history of the Revell plastic model kit company. Revell was founded in the United States, but had a UK operation in Potters Bar in the 1960s and 1970s that made a significant contribution to the overall business - designing kits, manufacturing tools, and moulding kits. However, this contribution is sadly overlooked in current histories of the company. If any of your readers or their family members worked for Revell (GB) in its heyday, I'd really appreciate it if they'd get in touch with their memories, especially if they are prepared to be interviewed. I'm trying to build a picture of Revell (GB)'s activities, ultimately to allow us, the Classic British Kits group of the UK International Plastic Modeller's Society (IPMS-UK), to do justice to its history and create a display of classic Revell GB kits at Europe's largest model show - Scale Model World.

Please contact me by email at: cmatthewbacon@mac.com.
best regards,

Hi everyone, just reading the latest 'Barnet & Potters Bar Times' and have come to realize that Potters Bar Station isn't going to be included for the oyster card upgrade in January!

Is it me or does anyone think this is an utter joke??? New Barnet is being included, so why cant PB, even if we had to be in a 7th zone? Just like the zones of the metropolitan line that extends to zone 9! We use oyster all the time for the buses, and it would have made sense that oyster was available on the train too. Seems to me totally unfair. FCC obviously have a good thing going at PB station & enjoy this little cash cow! Whilst we get a good fleecing! nice.

Hi everyone,

I'm a 3rd year Geography student at the University of Nottingham, who is currently completing a dissertation on social relations with the gypsy and traveller sites in Hertsmere.

As part of my project, I would like to get the attitudes of the public towards the current sites in and around Potters Bar, and potentially any more that may be created.

I am therefore looking for about 8 volunteers who will be happy to attend a short meeting at 8pm on Monday 14th December, at St John’s Methodist Church, Baker Street. Refreshments will be provided.

It will be really useful to get a wide range of views on this topic-of both men and women; people of all ages; and those who have no problem with the gypsy/ travellers sites, and those that do. In particular, I would really appreciate and encourage anyone who is a local resident near the Barnet Road site to participate, as this site is a special area of focus for my study.

If you are happy to take part, please do get in contact on 07929 441 274 or at ndonko@hotmail.co.uk. If you also have any friends or family that may be able to help, please encourage them to contact me too.

Thank you, and any help you can lend will be greatly appreciated.

A HIGH-visibility joint Neighbourhood Police and British Transport Police operation designed to tackle anti-social behaviour in Darkes Lane and the Potters Bar railway station took place on Saturday (August 22, 2009) – the first of its kind.

“Tackling anti-social behaviour in Darkes Lane and the train station is one of our Parkfield ward priorities,” said Neighbourhood Officer PC Jonathan Singleton. “Local residents have told us this is of concern to them and as a result, we are working in partnership with British Transport Police (BTP) to tackle the problem.”

BTP Sergeant Neil McGrath said: “The operation in conjunction with the local Hertsmere Safer Neighbourhood Team was highly successful. Through our joint working and high visibility policing of the train station and surrounding areas, we deterred those thinking about committing crime or anti-social behaviour.

"This also reassured both commuters and members of the local community, particularly in Darkes Lane, The Walk and the High Street. We were well received with the local community and I look forward to building on both this relationship and working more closely with Hertfordshire Constabulary.”

Jonathan said: “This was the first time we linked in with BTP and it worked very well. We also made use of ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) and our Special Constables (volunteers with police powers) and used dogs to patrol other areas we knew young people visit to smoke cannabis, including Oakmere Park and Parkfield Park.”

He said: “Although we didn’t make any arrests, it was a successful operation in tackling anti-social behaviour and we had favourable comments from the managers of McDonalds, Subway and The Admiral Byng pub – who have all been victims of anti-social behaviour in the area. We will continue to run joint operations with BTP in and around the station as it has been highlighted as important to both residents and businesses in the area.”

Would you like to help run pottersbarforum.org?
We're looking for anyone who wants to become involved in day to day management here.

Please get in contact with me if you'd be able to help out.

Why are you looking for people to help?
I'm going to university. Whilst I'd be happy to carry on with the technical arrangements and paying for the site I really think the site would benefit from someone in town who can encourage debate, promote the site and ensures everything is kept civilised!

What does this involve?
Very little work at all. It would just be nice if someone wants to help promote the site, encourage debate and as mentioned, keep it civilised.

Will I get paid?
Erm no. Just a wonderful warm feeling from volunteering. Surely that's as good as money?

What if no one wants to help?
Sadly I might have to close the forum (this isn't suppose to look so much like emotional blackmail - just reflects the realities of the situation).
