Quote:Parking Meters are being proposed for Darkes Lane and other Potters Bar areas. The proposals are expected to be approved at a meeting of Hertsmere Borough Councils Executive this afternoon, and could see 4 enforcement officers recruited next summer.
Parking outside shops (on-street) would be limited to 1 hour and cost 1p/minute.
Car parks and other locations would cost 40p for 1 hour and up to £7.50 for over 7 hours.
The surplus, if any, would be put back into the town for CCTV and other improvements.
I personally think its disgusting. We are residents of this town and we can't park without having to pay. We all ready pay enough. Even worse is it where people have to pay for their friends to visit them by giving them one of those scratch card like things.
Funny how they can find enough money to do parking meters but can't improve the Darkes Lane/Mutton Lane junction!
Pathetic idea! They have car parks behind Sportz Academy and behind Darkes Lane. Isn't that enough. Just leave some things alone!
If Potters Bar wasn't overun with kids and mopeds then maybe people might walk to Darkes Lane.

There is already parking permitted for one hour. If it is properly enforced, there would be no need for parking meters and therefore no shortage in parking spaces. Instead of this the council has come up with a money generating scheme which will surely kill the retail businesses in the area (which are already struggling to stay in business). Some premises have already been closed for over a year and with this new scheme enforced, we may see many more. Whoever planned this seems to be someone who is not familiar with Potters Bar's current situation.

The people who made this horrifing decision are in Bushey/Borehamwood no doubt. They don't really care about us - just look at the CAB for example.
Darkes Lane will surely end up full of yobs and look like a scene from a western film, with tumbleweed rolling down it

Well, no. If you go to the carparks in the middle of the day they are full and you often can't get a space.
I think the small vote we have had on this is already a very good representation of Potters Bar's feelings on this matter - maybe they should listen.
If anyone wants to voice themselves, you can post your objections
with reasons to:
The Chief Executive
Hertsmere Borough Council
Civic Offices
Elstree Way
Borehamwood
Herts WD6 1WA
Time is running out

, you have to send before the 12th of June.

I think they should charge people who want to stay longer than an hour. Its all the businesses down Darkes Lane who leave there car there.
People just want to drive into Darkes lane, run into a shop or two and go again. Less than 15 mins. It should be free for up to 30 mins.
PATHETIC IDEA HERTSMERE!!!

Poor idea but for those able bodied there is currently quite a bit of free parking only a few minutes walk away. The other day I had 30p in change (typical) and there were no free spaces on Darkes Lane but I found lots of free parking in the marked bays on Billy Lows Lane. I don't see why they can't just discourage commuter and all day space hogging by making different roads no waiting for different hours of the day and leave it free all round. We don't want to go the way of other shopping areas with too many charges, it will kill what little shopping there is left.
According to the WH Times, nearly 6000 signatures were collected for the petition and nearly 400 people wrote to the council leader opposing this idea. I wrote with suggestions they should increase parking by narrowing the wide pavement outside the post office down towards the crossing, and keep it at an hour free.
Personally I rarely use the free parking but I'd hate it to be no longer there and it would only allow Tesco to grow and the smaller shops to suffer.

Wow, how can they ignore 600 signatures and 400 letters?
I think your suggestions are a great idea, I mean, do we really need such a wide pavement. If the area was fairly patrolled, at 1hr free, I think it would be much better than this new revenue stream they are trying to create.
As for Tesco, sometimes I wonder if it every should have been built

I meant 6000 obviously

This is not dirrectly concerned with parking meters in Darkes Lane, but in the Barnet Road opposit Kwick-fit there some hourly parking bays one car a Blue MGB has been on one of these bays since before Christmas. Why has nothing been done about this to make room for genuine shoppers? I have spoken to the Traffic Wardens and they tell me that there is nothing that thay can do about this. What are the Wardens there for if they can not enforce the hourly restricions. Also what is the piont of having these bays if the time limit is not enforced
I think all the bays in the car park there should also be free at all times, there's no money to be made from parking, it's just to discourage commuters coming in from outside the area, and that car park is a long way from anything commutable.
Agreed though the bays outside the shop seem poorly policed, annoyed me finding nowhere free to park just to nip in to get my chinese take-away on a saturday
BTW I have had an acknowledgement to my objection letter, it just said they would be holding a meeting at which all the objections would be raised. Said they would contact me after this meeting.
