Hi Sebastian and welcome to Potters Bar and the forum!

I don't know how I would go about getting a cheap bike (there is Bryans in Brookmans Park) but I don't know how cheap they are. There is a cycle lane near to Potters Bar, its more of a route along site a road - its on this map http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=52...p=newsearch.srf
It runs along Swanland Road and the A1(M). Apart for leisure I don't know what else you would use it for.

The Cycle route is known as 'The Great North Way' - It roughly follows the route of the A1(M). It goes from The Duke o York area down the back of Kits End, under the M25 into Wash Common and along Swanland Road to Welham Green and on to Hatfield and beyond. It is a fantastic route and one I cycle (in the summer) regularly. It goes on a mixture of roads and cycle paths, is a nice safe route.

There is also the option of cycling The Great North Way to Hatfield then along the cycle path to WGC and pick up the Welwyn Garden City to Hertford cycle path. This is a made up cycle route following the old WGC to Hertford Railway line.

Another nice route is the Hatfield to St Albans route (Alban Way) following the old railway line. Again it is all of road (apart from a few areas where you cross roads but these are quiet back streets so no problems there)

Try this site http://www.sustrans.org/ for all cycle routes in the UK.
Thanks for yours answers !

With my girlfriend, we bought old bicycles to do the "Brighton annual Bicycle Race".
We tried them between Potters Bar and CockFoster's park (the road is very dangereous) and between Potters Bar and South Mimms ( with the map of the excellent website : www.sustrans.org )

So, we bought too 2 helmets, I think it's essential here Blink
