PB was recently criticised for being full of restaurants and take aways, with letters in the local paper pouring scorn on any new planning application for such. I wondered if anyone felt this was true or not? To my mind it has created a competition which has seen a great number of very good restaurants and take aways.
I have to confess I've found a couple and stuck with them over the last 10 years or so, wondered if anyone has any other suggestions..
Curry Garden t/a on the High St. Have been going there since it was called Jasmin many years back, it's always been exceptionally good and good value for money. I've recently been to PB Tandoori a couple of times which seems equally as good although a little more pricey for take away. The sunday buffet here is superb though. A sunday buffet freshly cooked? Brilliant idea!
Chongs Kitchen on the High St .. some of the best Chinese cuisine I've tasted this side of Chinatown. How gutted am I when he's closed for the annual holiday!
Meze Taverna. Seems very under-utilised, brilliant for during the week quiet evening meals and total madcap saturday night till 2am. The atmosphere is brilliant, you don't feel like a customer, you feel like a family friend.
The Sea Shell, up on the high street again, best fish and chips around.
The Wyllyotts Manor was good many years back when they did the sunday carvery, it's disappointing to not have that now they're The Old Manor, although the food is still as good as ever. Oakmere House brilliant as a beefeater, not so sure now it's Out and Out but it's a different market.
Anyone else recommend any good eating spots or disagree with me on the above?
Oh yes, occasionally I've kebabbed at the one in Darkes Lane that's also a chippy, and the one up on the High St that stays open late and is a trouble-magnet. Also the Turkish one with the secret restaurant that stays open till the last buses get back to the garage. I recall one night coming back from a mates in Harringey starving, this is before the supermarkets opened all night, there was nothing open around there, was so surprised to find Silver Jubilee open at 1.30am when north london had nothing to offer!
Potters Bar has so many resturants and cafes etc. I can't count. Silver Jubilee and the Chinese Buffet on the high street (can't remember the name) are my favourites. It would be a good idea if everyone contributed here their favourite resturants etc. for reccommendations here!

The Chinese used to be the Joyful, is now the Buffet Palace. I was a bit surprised by the
link on the main board where they requested no more information be placed on the website? It always seems busy in there, and most restaurants in the town. I think good competition helps improve all the food outlets.
I don't know what they mean that

Anyway, this forum at
http://www.pottersbarforum.org is seperate from
http://www.pottersbar.org and if they have any issues with the content they should contact admin@pottersbarforum.org. I would have thought this reccommendation would be good for them?
p.s. Do you know what they mean by that?
I would have thought any publicity is good publicity and the menus and opening hours being available online is brilliant, can't think why they weren't interested.
I forgot to mention the Tesco restaurant which is reasonably priced and regularly used by Maple House people
Has anyone ever gone wrong in a PB restaurant or take away?
My parents used to frequent Papillion on High Street every new years but over millenium eve they put the price up so much they never went back, it closed down some months later and became
One O Two.
Ahhh!!!!
The Istanbul on high Street does a mean kebab (and delivers)
The Chilli Raj on Darkes Lane is excellent.
Shame Tim's is now under new ownership. Great Fish N' chips but not quite as good as Tim's
You can't knock the Manor and I'm surprised no one has mentioned Pizza Town. Best pizzas in the area surely.
I'm all for resturants in PB and there's certainly a market there for all of them
Yes, Istanbul is good proper quality food not your usual kebab shop post-pub stuff
Always found chips at
were a little greasy and not up to the standard of the Sea Shell which is *superb*
Chongs Kitchen seems to have changed hands or the younger generation have taken over. New menu, you can pick a certain number of starters and mains and get the duck all for a fixed price which is good. But I was really thirsty having got a take away the other night, which I never had when Michael was in charge! (it's now called New Chongs Kitchen).
Manor is top quality grub, was in there having a beer with a mate one afternoon and we had a burger, freshly cooked, tasted great and not much more expensive than McDonalds would have been!
Talking of McDonalds, is our one on the list of those closing? I heard it wasn't doing too well.

The 2 Thai restaurants are top class, the Thai Rack in Barnet Road, and the Royal Elephant in the High Street. A hidden gem is the chilli-con-carne that the owner of Seamus O'Donnell's makes himself, at only £3 with french bread it's a lovely hot!! lunch.
The Chinese at the top of The Walk, Table 88, is top quality as well. The Pubali is for me the best Indian in PB at the moment, but this changes as Chefs change, and the Indian takeaway opposite the Green Man Pub, 'Masalla' is flippin' brilliant.
Long live PB for food I say, certainly the best choice for many a mile!
ROCK ON SILVER JUBILLEE !
See there's an indian take away due to open on Cranborne Parade soon too, next to the Cafe. Went to the Meze last weekend, now you just can't beat that on a friday night. Amazing food and a huge quantity of it too. The next table were a hen group of 6 who got up to dance after the starter, leaving a massive plate of main course uneaten. Sigh...
> The Old Manor, although the food is still as good as ever.
Follow this up, been back to the Old Manor a couple of times in the last few weeks and it really is very good in the restaurant. Particular favourites, the steak and ale pie (which is home made, having asked), the set menu with soup starter and chicken main for £9.99. Most impressed

Old Manor is my favourite restaurant in PB bar none. Ribs and sweet potato chips are A1.
Chilli Raj for currys.
Buffet Palace for Chinese.
Royal Elephant for Thai.
Agreed .. though for Thai it's Thai Rack for me - I haven't tried the Royal Elephant yet. I think when we were in the market for Thai it didn't seem to have the Massaman curry?
Further afield the White Hart pub in South Mimms does very good home cooked lunches and I've heard good reports about food at the Strafford Arms too.
