For those who use the “Pay as You Go” Oyster cards changes are being made this month and from the 19th if you don’t touch in and out you won’t get the currently called incomplete journey you will just get an automatic £4 charge which will not be refunded.
When touching in or out be careful as sometimes you may hear a bleep as there are a couple of slightly different ones many have taken it as the card being read when in fact the bleep heard was that the card was not read. The easiest way to make sure it has been read is when touching the readers, look at the gate display which will show the card details for about 3 seconds.

You don’t just get hit for the £4, as it will also not count towards the cheapest ticket policy. So you start again.

There are other changes but that is the one which is going to catch a number of people out and cost them. So please double check, if your not sure get the gateline staff to check you card.
It would be really useful if Oyster cards could be used at PB Station.

Do special discounts (like for OAPs or children) apply to those not living in London?

At the current time Children outside london can apply for a child Oyster card via the tfl website, but nothing for OAP's which is poor. If an OAP lives in London its a 100% free pass, not in Hertsmere which is strange as we are still within the zonal system for TFL. So why Potters Bar is not in Zone 6 on National Rail seems strange as the zone for trains ends at Hadley Wood.

Ken Livingstone has been in talks with National Rail for some months now trying to get them to take the Oyster card which would then allow for more discounts. Not much good for us in Potters Bar unless they move the zones.

On the Underground they are now looking at changing the zones, the talk is of changing them to either 1-4 or 1-3 not sure yet but these look like they will be changing in the 2008 rises.

We have just got the full list of price changes on the Tube (2nd Jan 07) which are terrible as an example currently a single from Cockfosters to Heathrow is £4 cash this is rising to £6.80 cash. Ken is basically forcing everyone to get an Oyster.

Cockfosters to Heathrow
Oyster => £4
Cash => £6.80

That is ridiculous if I have got it right - it is as you say just forcing people to get an Oyster. Soon I expect it will all be automated with no human ticket desks - and the Oyster Card is a great way to track individual's movements over London.

That's correct it is being planned to have "shorter" opening hours in "some" ticket office's and they say no staff losses as they will be used out on the gateline etc. This months changes they will make several changes which means most common problems can be dealt with at a ticket office instead of ringing the help desk, but for myself who works on a station with my ticket office being closed more often it does not help. Most station still do not even have enough of the Oyster machines anyway. I have asked numerous times what the plans are to bring in enough machine and guess what as it is a private company who install them its not in the contract to put more in! I just hope they sort that one out.
