Is it just me or do Tesco seem to be grafually secretly expanding? I have heard they are now adding a coffee shop and making all sorts of other changes - is the store just getting bigger and bigger?
Has any one heard about the Tesco Epress they plan to build near cranborne Parade.??
I have split the post RE: Tesco Express by ringtail from Shop Closures in Darkes Lane and merged it with this thread about Tesco.

Nothing secret about it?

Why the concern? Bigger = more choice. Isn't that good?

Might I suggest it may be a concern for the smaller businesses in the town. We have done quite a few stories in the paper (Potters Bar Edition of the Welwyn and Hatfield Times) about how they are increasingly threatened by the supermarkets. If they go, Darkes Lane and High Street could be keft like a 'ghost town'. What do you think?

I did a story on the increasingly empty shops in PB and have been following it.

Do let me know if you have any more to add.

Thanks

Might I suggest it hasn't got much to do with Tesco.

Look no further than your local council.

What do they do to encourage people to use local shops? Why of course they usually paint some nice lines the shade of yellow.

Take PB.... 1 hours free parking, and even then you have to remember to get your free ticket. More than 1 hour and you have to pay (which I won't do as I already pay enough in tax, NI, council tax, car tax, etc etc)

Barnet is a non starter as you have to pay to park.

What about customer service? Several shops in PB we won't set foot inside.

One shop where the owner is simply quite rude.

A newsagent who point blank refuses to advertise any community events.

Local shops are dying because they don't offer choice, are sometimes difficult to get to, are expensive, and sometimes lack customer service.

What choice, its ok if you want to go out and buy junk food or buy a house. Apart from that we don't have much choice but to go outside PB.

Local shops are dying becuase there isn't enough variety.

As someone else has said here, there needs to be some big name high street stores to attract the shoppers to the area instead of jumping in their car and going to WGC or somewhere else.

The bigger they are the less able they are to adequately stock the shelves. This certainly seems to be the case in the potters Bar branch.
