Im not sure about fireworks, they are either really nice some days, but other times they are just a problem. Sure, for special nationwide occasions (eg. New Year, Bonfire Night etc) they are great, but at other times (someones Birthday) I don't think they are neccesary.
They are also very traumatic to animals, and can, when set-off at night, wake people up.
I can't make up my mind about fireworks, what are your opinions???
So what are the current laws regarding fireworks etc. ???
This law came into force yesterday:-
Quote:· The creation of a curfew on firework use – between 11 pm and 7 am (in line with the Noise Act 1996), with the exception of the following nights where the curfew will begin at different times:
- November 5th – 12 midnight;
- New Years Eve – 1 am;
- Chinese New Year – 1 am;
- Diwali night – 1 am.
The rest of the rules are avaliable here <a href='http://www.dti.gov.uk/ccp/topics1/facts/fireworks.htm' target='_blank'>http://www.dti.gov.uk/ccp/topics1/facts/fireworks.htm</a>
I thought I saw some young people on those scooters setting off fireworks by McDonalds yesterday :o

I'm not being rude or anything but I think its a bit unfair that November the 5th, one of the few traditions of our holiday, ends fireworks at 12midnight, but the other festivals end at 1:00. I suppose its because these other festivals celebrate one year becoming another at midnight - but I still think its unfair.

I recall as a kid it was great to have fireworks in the back garden, it felt better than a proper display as it was more personal. It would be a shame to deprive children of that pleasure but at the same time there has to be some sort of mechanism to stop 14-15 year olds getting fireworks and using them as weapons. Any other time of the year having a quantity of explosives you'd be a terrorist!
Maybe only sell them to people over 25

The new regulations introduced last year go some way to improving the restrictions on those who sell and possess explosive materials ie fireworks.
The Police are the enforcing body for the new regulations and the amount of complaints to police this year are down as far as I'm aware. The regulations did have more of an effect on the selling of fireworks to minors. The regulations do set out strict guidelines to retailers, even the size of the sign retailers HAVE to display if selling fireworks is set out in the act.
Fireworks are now defined as 4 categories:
Category 1 includes fireworks which are suitable for use inside domestic properties / houses (Indoor Fireworks), in reality pretty innocuous fireworks (examples - cap, cracker snap, novelty match, party popper, serpent, sparkler or throwdown).
Category 2 fireworks are for outdoor use in relatively confined areas (Garden Fireworks), requiring a minimum spectator distance of 5 metres.
Category 3 fireworks are for use in large outdoor spaces (Display Fireworks), they are larger fireworks that require spectator distances of a minimum of 25 metres (these may not be suitable for use in gardens),
Category 4 fireworks are for specialist use and may only be used by a professionally qualified, trained person (use at an organised public fireworks display, for example). The general public are prohibited from possession.
Like any new law it will take a while before it is fully effective but early indications do show it is having some kind of impact.

I'm probably getting old, but these days it seems what used to pass for "common sense" has to be replaced with rules, regulations and laws. I don't recall half these problems going on when I was younger and we never had ASBO's either!
Trouble is these days people are very aware of their so called 'Rights' - They seem to forget the rights of others - Lack of community spirit these days!

At about 12.00a.m. morning of 23rd near off of Chace Avenue there was a series of fireworks going off, they were extremely loud and frightening, I thought it was an offence now to let off fireworks any other time than around Firework night and New Years Eve. Did anyone else hear the noise?

As you can see here <a href='http://www.dti.gov.uk/ccp/topics1/facts/fireworks.htm' target='_blank'>http://www.dti.gov.uk/ccp/topics1/facts/fireworks.htm</a>, I do believe that it is illegal to let of fireworks at this time.

I live about a mile for you and I specifically remember hearing fireworks around that time - they must have been loud!
It's a beautiful warm still evening tonight with light wind and some halfwit has chosen tonight to burn stuff, the whole of Cranborne area is bathed in stinky smoke smell.
Peoples, please do it when others don't have their windows open, my house now smells like it's been set on fire. It's going to be an uncomfortable night

My second thought of course is just don't do it, put your burnables in the green bin or paper bin or shred them and green bin them if it's confidential. Not only do we not want to smell it but it has to be bad for the environment. Yuk.
It's actually against the law to light a bonfire before 7pm.
I usually find it's people new to the area so I make a point of telling them all about the perfectly good council tip we have in PB
