Hi All!

I know there can be a lot of debate about the pros & cons of speed humps and other traffic calming measures but.....

We have had speed humps in The Walk and Billy Lows Lane for some time now, but none in Mount Grace Road. The installed speed humps may or may not be acheiving their goal in those roads, but that is not the issue.

While Mount Grace Road is admittedly not directly connected to either the High Street or Darkes Lane, it is a long, wide road with good sight lines for motorists making it easy to exceed the speed limit with little effort, AND school children do regularly walk up and down it.

Why then, were speed humps NOT installed in Mount Grace Road? I did try to find this out by contacting Hertsmere council, but got the usual runaround, and no answer.

I do not particularly like speed humps, but my fear is that it is only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured or killed by a speeding car in Mount Grace Road.

This is the nub of the matter. I am not talking about car doing 35, 45 or even 55 mph. Cars regularly drive down Mount Grace Road at 60, 70 or even higher mph, because it is wide, and speeding drivers BELIEVE they can see far enough ahead to avoid any problems. Wrong. They are just arrogant imbeciles living on borrowed time.

Does anyone else have an opinion about this issue?
Totally agree

I have to be honest that I avoid Billy Lows Lane because of the bumps and Mount Grace Rd is an easy shortcut. You can easily pick up a lot of speed down there because of the natural hill also. I suppose you have to think that tennis balls and footballs can easily go over the fence and kids and dogs run after balls and not look. The gates to Mount Grace are always open too.

Maybe just speed bumps on the section leading up to the school would be a good idea.
While some sort of traffic calming measure is perhaps necessary on Mount Grace Road - I don't think speed humps are the right choice.

Although this would never happen, the road could be narrowed and the pavements extended. The wider pavement could accommodate trees. This is what i think is the least 'offensive' method of traffic calming suitable for Mount Grace Road.
Hi again,

I am not alone!!

I agree totally that speed humps are not an ideal solution. I have also wondered if some other form of traffic calming would work, but to be honest I think a single, strategically placed speed hump would do the trick.

My main concern is the real nutters who hack down Mount Grace as if it is a race track, and one fairly mean hump, sited perhaps near the entrance to the Squash Club, would definitely have the desired effect.

The next question, is how we can make something actually happen? Does anyone know the right person to contact?

Cheers, Vince
